Eduardo Jovel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Biology at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems. He also serves as Director of Indigenous Research Partnerships, focusing on integrating Indigenous knowledge systems with Western scientific methodologies while maintaining academic rigor. Research Interests: Indigenous plant knowledge and medicinal systems Mycology and fungal bioactivity Natural product chemistry for health applications Aboriginal health and environmental health intersections Research ethics in Indigenous contexts Gender relations and socio-ecological systems Publication Trends: His 15 most recent articles (1996–2014) span ethnobotany, mycology, natural products chemistry, and Indigenous health research. These works emphasize antioxidant properties, antimicrobial testing, bioactive compound isolation, and environmental contaminant studies, particularly mercury exposure and fungal melanins. Key Projects: Include ecological intensification for food security in Peruvian Andes, indoor mold impacts on Aboriginal housing, bioactive BC fungi identification, environmental contaminant effects on marine foods, and mercury chelation plant research. Labs & Teams: Jovel leads the UBC Aboriginal Research Lab, promoting interprofessional collaboration and community-driven research frameworks.
