Jennifer Clapp is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and Sustainability within the Department of Environmental and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her academic credentials include a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MA/PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research program critically examines global governance structures at the intersection of economic systems, environmental sustainability, and food security, with particular focus on transnational corporate influence and trade policies affecting vulnerable populations. Employing an interdisciplinary framework spanning political science, economics, and environmental studies, Professor Clapp investigates how international economic policies can be restructured to advance food sovereignty and ecological resilience. Her scholarship consistently challenges conventional approaches to global food governance, emphasizing power asymmetries between developed and developing nations. Her extensive publication record includes nine authored or edited books and over 70 scholarly contributions. Key works analyze corporate power in agrifood systems ( Corporate Power in Global Agrifood Governance , MIT Press 2009), international food aid politics ( Hunger in the Balance , Cornell University Press 2012), and sustainable development pathways ( Paths to a Green World , MIT Press 2011). Professor Clapp's recognition includes the Canadian Association for Food Studies' 2012 Research Excellence Award and Donner Prize shortlisting. She significantly contributed to academic discourse as co-editor of Global Environmental Politics (2007-2012) following eight years as associate editor. Her policy impact extends through high-level consulting engagements with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, UN World Food Programme, Canadian International Development Agency, and Oxfam UK, translating scholarly insights into practical governance solutions for global food system challenges.
