Professor Tamsin Mather is a distinguished volcanologist and Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford, where she also serves as a Fellow of University College. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2024, she leads groundbreaking research at the intersection of volcanology, atmospheric chemistry, and environmental science. Her work spans from understanding present-day volcanic hazards to investigating volcanism's role in Earth's geological history and habitability. Her primary research interests include volcanic degassing processes, atmospheric impacts of volcanic plumes, mercury cycling in volcanic systems, and the environmental consequences of large igneous provinces. Using satellite Earth observation, field measurements, and geochemical analysis, she examines volcanic behavior as natural hazards, planetary-scale processes, and sources of natural resources like geothermal energy. Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a strong focus on mercury as a tracer for volcanic activity, with significant contributions to understanding large igneous province impacts on mass extinctions, rift volcanism in Ethiopia, and volcanic plume chemistry. Her work bridges geochemistry, climate science, and hazard assessment through innovative methodologies.
