Björn Reinhard is a Professor and Director of the Nano-Bio Interface Laboratory at Boston University. His research focuses on optical materials and their applications in understanding biological systems, particularly at the interface of nanotechnology and biology. He leads a lab developing advanced techniques such as plasmon rulers, plasmon coupling microscopy, and multiscale nanoparticle cluster arrays. Education: Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley (2004–2006), Dr. rer. nat. from Technical University Kaiserslautern (2003), Diploma in Engineering from Technical University Munich (2000), and Intermediate Diploma from University of Bielefeld (1997). Research Interests: The lab explores nanotechnology-driven solutions for biological challenges, including plasmonic biosensors, nanoparticle-cell interactions, and light-driven antimicrobial systems. Techniques employed include Raman spectroscopy, single-molecule fluorescence, and electron microscopy. Recent work emphasizes plasmon-enhanced catalysis, nanoplastics environmental impact, and targeted drug delivery via GM3-functionalized nanoparticles. Publications highlight advancements in plasmonics, nanoparticle design, and biomedical applications, with recent trends in chiral optical forces and nanoscale sensing technologies. The lab collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, such as developing optical sensors and studying lipid-nanoparticle interactions. Advising and Grants: Reinhard mentors students in nanobiotechnology and photonics, preparing them for roles in emerging technologies. His group’s work is supported by grants focusing on plasmonic photocatalysis, biomedical imaging, and environmental nanotoxicology.
