His publications reveal a cohesive scholarly trajectory focused on Black performance art, digital media, hip-hop, and 19th-century performance cultures. Key themes include the political dimensions of camp aesthetics, the materiality of racialized bodies, and the genealogies of Black feminist artistic practices. His work consistently connects historical performance traditions to contemporary artistic interventions. His exceptional contributions have been recognized with three major awards in 2016: William Sanders Scarborough Prize (MLA) Barnard Hewitt Award (ASTR) Errol Hill Award (ASTR) Research support includes prestigious fellowships from the Ford Foundation and Woodrow Wilson Foundation.
