Deborah Youdell is a Professor and Dean of the Macquarie School of Education at Macquarie University. She has held prominent roles including Head of School of Education at the University of Birmingham (2012–2016), Professor at UCL Institute of Education (2008–2011), and Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham (2004–2008). Her expertise lies in biosocial research, educational inequalities, and sociological studies of learner subjectivities. She has led editorial roles for journals like the British Journal of Sociology of Education and International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education . Her research focuses on how education policies and practices shape student identities, particularly through biosocial and political lenses. She has advised numerous students who now hold academic and leadership roles globally. Awards include the Society for Educational Studies' Book of the Year Award (2000) for Rationing Education (co-authored with David Gillborn). Recent publications explore topics such as Judith Butler’s influence on education, biosocial educational frameworks, and challenges in global education policy. She has contributed to debates on gender education in anti-gender political climates and the impact of neoliberal policies on student retention. Deborah has held leadership roles in institutions like Manchester Metropolitan University and Pontifica Universidad Catholica, emphasizing her commitment to advancing educational equity and critical research.
