Prof. Dr. Eveline Crone is a Professor of Neurocognitive Developmental Psychology at Leiden University and holds a joint position as Professor of Developmental Neuroscience in Society at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research focuses on adolescent brain development, social and emotional processes during puberty, and their implications for education, policy, and societal well-being. She leads the Brain and Development Lab and the Leiden Consortium on Individual Development (L-CID), a longitudinal twin study under the Gravitation Programme. Her work investigates how brain regions like the prefrontal cortex and reward systems influence adolescent behavior, decision-making, and social interactions. Notable contributions include demonstrating heightened sensitivity of reward-related brain areas during puberty and the role of social media in identity formation. Her groundbreaking research on fairness considerations and intentionality in adolescents has advanced understanding of neurocognitive development. Awarded the NWO Spinoza Prize (2017), her honors include recognition for redefining societal views on adolescence. Her studies on alcohol use, creativity training, and neural mechanisms underlying social behavior highlight interdisciplinary approaches. Ongoing projects explore how adolescents navigate modern challenges like digital identity and decision-making pressures. Key Research Themes: Adolescent brain plasticity, social media impact, moral reasoning, and policy applications. Labs/Initiatives: Brain and Development Lab, Leiden Consortium on Individual Development (L-CID). Grants: Gravitation grant for L-CID (2013–2023), Spinoza Prize funding (€2.5M).
