Soo Ah Kwon is Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with affiliations in the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, Human Development and Family Studies, and the Center for Global Studies. Her research focuses on youth activism, global governance, race institutionalization in education, and neoliberal restructuring in academic and nonprofit sectors. Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley Her work explores how youth engage with global institutions like the United Nations, the racial dynamics of international student diversity, and the neoliberal co-optation of community engagement internships. She has published extensively on topics including affirmative governmentality, panethnic identity, and youth-led policy reform. Recent research trends highlight her focus on global governance infrastructures, youth participation in international policy, and the intersection of race with educational globalization. Her articles often critique neoliberal frameworks in activism, education, and institutional diversity programs. Academic honors include multiple teaching awards, the Conrad Humanities Scholar designation, and grants from the Spencer Foundation, USDA HATCH, and the Beckman Research Award. She co-founded a research center with $250,000 in funding.
