Celka Ojakangas is a Los Angeles-based composer and violist currently serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Occidental College. She also holds Adjunct Professor positions at Occidental College and Glendale Community College, alongside teaching string instruction at the Neighborhood Music School in Boyle Heights, CA. Education: B.A. from Drury University, M.M. and D.M.A. from the University of Southern California. Her research and creative work focuses on hybridism and recontextualization in music, blurring boundaries between culturally-defined genres to create eclectic textures, rhythms, and grooves. Influenced by her diverse collaborations in symphonies, jazz bands, rock bands, and new music ensembles, her compositions emphasize creativity and play for both performers and listeners. Ojakangas has received prestigious awards such as the CULTIVATE Copland House Emerging Composer’s Fellowship, Bang on a Can Summer Festival Composer’s Fellowship, and Opera America’s Discovery Grant for Female Composers. Her works have been commissioned and premiered by notable institutions like Alarm Will Sound, Music from Copland House, and Portland State University Opera.
