Dr. Jochen Guck is a Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, leading the Biological and Soft Systems group. Previously, he served as a Nachwuchsgruppenleiter (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent) at the University of Leipzig's Soft Matter Physics Division until 2006. His work focuses on biophysics, cell mechanics, and optical micromanipulation. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin (2001) and a Habilitation from the University of Leipzig (2006). Education: 1993: Abitur, Gymnasium Bad Königshofen 1995: Vordiplom in Physics, Julius Maximilians Universität Würzburg 1997: M.A. in Physics, University of Texas at Austin 2001: PhD in Physics, University of Texas at Austin 2002–2006: Habilitation in Physics, University of Leipzig Research Interests: Biophysics, soft condensed matter physics, neuroscience, optical micromanipulation, cancer diagnostics via cell mechanics, and applications of pluripotent stem cells. He pioneered techniques like the optical stretcher and developed methods for optical cell characterization. Awards: DAAD Auslandsstipendium (1996–1997) Professional Development Award, UT Austin (2001) Young Scientist Award in Biomedical Photonics (2003) Professional Contributions: Holds patents for the Optical Stretcher (US and European), consults for EMD Technologies, and collaborates on microfluidic systems. His research bridges biophysics and biomedical engineering, emphasizing mechanical phenotyping of cells for disease diagnosis.
