Habibur Rahman is a Professor at the University of Alberta's Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science, within the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on canola genetics and molecular breeding, aiming to enhance yield, disease resistance, and seed quality through conventional and advanced genomic techniques. He holds a PhD from Copenhagen University (Denmark). Teaching responsibilities include courses such as PLSc 365 (Genetic Improvement of Crop Plants), AFNS 565 (Plant Breeding), and PL SC 352 (Invasive Alien Plants). His research integrates molecular markers, genomics, and biotechnology to broaden canola's genetic base and introgress traits like disease resistance via wide hybridization. Key research interests include clubroot resistance mechanisms, Brassica genetics, and the application of omics tools for crop improvement. His work addresses challenges in canola production, including pathogen resistance and agronomic trait optimization. Recent projects explore silicon's role in clubroot management and the genetic basis of seed quality traits in Brassica species. Rahman collaborates on interdisciplinary studies, including metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of plant-pathogen interactions. His contributions advance sustainable agricultural practices through genetic innovation and precision breeding.
