Andrew Shepherd is the Head of the Department of Geography and Environment at Northumbria University, and Director of the NERC Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling. He is a Principal Scientific Advisor to the European Space Agency's CryoSat mission and co-leads the ESA-NASA Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise. His research focuses on measuring changes in Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, their interaction with the climate system, and contributions to sea level rise. He also works on satellite sensor calibration/validation, collaborating with space agencies, glaciologists, and government agencies. Shepherd holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Leicester. He has held academic positions at UCL, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Leeds. His honors include the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2008), Royal Society Wolfson Award (2014), and the International Glaciology Society Richardson Medal (2021). He supervises PhD students researching topics like Arctic sea ice variability, proglacial lakes, and climate change adaptation.
