Holden Maecker is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine and Director of the Human Immune Monitoring Center (HIMC). He holds multiple affiliations across Stanford institutions including Bio-X, the Cardiovascular Institute, Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, Stanford Cancer Institute, and Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. Dr. Maecker received his BS in Microbiology from Purdue University (1984) and PhD in Cancer Biology from Stanford University (1988). He completed postdoctoral work with Ronald and Shoshana Levy at Stanford, served as Assistant Professor of Biology at Loyola University Chicago, and worked as Senior Scientist at BD Biosciences before joining Stanford's faculty. His research focuses on defining metrics of immune competence across various clinical settings including cancer immunotherapy, organ transplantation, allergy, and chronic viral infection. His laboratory employs CyTOF mass cytometry combined with other technologies to survey immune features at the cellular level and examine links between these features and clinical outcomes. A long-term goal is to create an assay of global immune competence that could predict risk for various immune-related outcomes in both healthy individuals and in disease. Dr. Maecker's work has been particularly impactful through the Immunophenotyping Assessment in a COVID-19 Cohort (IMPACC) study, where his research has revealed critical insights about Type 2 immune responses in COVID-19 outcomes, genetic factors influencing disease severity, and immune responses in immunocompromised populations. His laboratory has published extensively on biomarkers predicting disease severity and vaccine responses. He advises doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in Immunology and Microbiology PhD programs. Under his leadership, the HIMC provides standardized immune monitoring services including Immunoassays, Mass Cytometry, Genomics, and Flow Cytometry, supporting numerous research projects across Stanford and beyond.
