Prof. Johan Garssen is a Professor of Immunopharmacology at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Science, leading the Immunopharmacology department. He also serves as Chief Scientific Advisor at Nutricia Research. His career spans roles at Numico-Research and Danone, focusing on immune modulation via nutritional interventions. Garssen earned his PhD from Utrecht University, studying T-cell roles in respiratory allergy, with postdoc work at Yale University.
Education:
- MD and Biology degrees (cum laude) from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1987)
- PhD in Immunology/Pharmacology from Utrecht University (1991), partly at Yale
Research Interests: Garssen’s work centers on immunomodulation through pre/probiotics, maternal diet effects on infant immunity, and allergy mechanisms. Key areas include gut microbiota’s role in immune development, food allergy prevention, and translational research linking nutrition to immune health. His studies often bridge clinical and preclinical models, emphasizing practical applications in medical nutrition.
Key Roles:
- Chair of Future Food Utrecht Research Hub
- Program Leader in Molecular Immunology and Exposome Hub initiatives
- Over 950 peer-reviewed publications, with a focus on immune modulation by dietary components
His research highlights the bidirectional relationship between nutrition and immune function, particularly in early life and chronic disease contexts.
