Luigi Naldini is a Full Professor of Histology and Director of the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (SR-Tiget) in Milan. He holds affiliations with Vita Salute San Raffaele University and has pioneered advancements in lentiviral vector development for gene therapy, impacting genetic and cancer treatment. Education MD in Medicine and Surgery, University of Turin (1983) PhD in Cytological and Morphogenetic Sciences, University of Turin (1989) Research Focus Luigi Naldini’s work spans gene therapy, lentiviral vectors, hematopoietic stem cell biology, and tumor angiogenesis. His lab has developed innovative strategies to enhance vector safety, including microRNA-regulated transgene expression for cell-specific targeting. These approaches have enabled breakthroughs in hemophilia B and metachromatic leukodystrophy treatments. Publications & Trends Recent articles highlight lentiviral vector optimization for hematopoietic stem cells, CRISPR-Cas9 applications, and clinical translation of gene therapies for rare genetic disorders. Key themes include overcoming immune barriers, targeting neurodegenerative diseases, and refining gene editing precision. Scientific Recognition Outstanding Achievement Award, ASGCT (2014) Honorary Doctorate, Vrije University of Brussels (2015) Beutler Prize, American Society of Hematology (2017) Louis-Jeantet Prize for Translational Medicine (2019) Phacilitate Lifetime Achievement Award (2024) Elected member, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (2022) Advising & Collaborations Luigi Naldini has served on doctoral college committees and led clinical trials for metachromatic leukodystrophy. His grants and projects focus on gene therapy safety and translational applications, supported by memberships in EMBO, ESGCT, and the National Academy of Sciences’ Human Gene Editing Committee. Labs & Teams He directs SR-Tiget, a leading gene therapy research institute in Milan, where his team advances lentiviral vector technology and gene editing applications in molecular medicine.
