Oliver M. O'Reilly is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, where he also serves as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Faculty Athletics Representative. He has been a faculty member since 1992 and has held significant administrative roles including Chair and Vice Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate and Associate Dean for Graduate Education. Dr. O'Reilly's educational background includes: B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Galway M.S. and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University Postdoctoral work at the Institut für Mechanik at ETH-Zürich His research spans continuum mechanics and nonlinear dynamics with specializations in Cosserat theories of deformable bodies, constrained rigid body dynamics, contact mechanics, and vibrations. His work has applications in soft robotics, MEMS devices, biomechanics, vehicle dynamics, and the study of everyday phenomena like spaghetti deformation during cooking. His theoretical contributions have significantly advanced the understanding of rod and shell mechanics. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on geometric mechanics, elastic rod theory, and applications to soft robotics.
