Michael Triantafyllou is the William I. Koch Professor of Marine Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he holds joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering and Ocean Engineering. He serves as Director of the MIT Center for Ocean Engineering, Head of the Ocean Science and Engineering Area, and Director of the MIT Towing Tank and Propeller Tunnel Facilities. His research focuses on biomimetic marine technologies, fluid dynamics, and vortex-induced vibrations, with applications in underwater robotics, energy recovery, and bio-inspired sensor design.
- Key research areas: Fluid-Structure Interaction
- Biomimetics for Marine Systems
- Vortex Dynamics and Control
- MEMS for Hydrodynamic Sensing
His recent publications analyze vortex-induced vibrations, bio-inspired flow sensors, and energy recovery in deformable marine bodies. Collaborators include Jianmin Miao (NTU), Jeff Lang (MIT), and Jason Dahl (URI). He advises 12 graduate students and leads experimental facilities like the MIT Towing Tank and Singapore Test Tank.
