Dr John Hiemstra is an Associate Professor in Geography at Swansea University, part of the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics. He obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2001) and held a Marie Curie postdoctoral position at the University of Glasgow (2002–2004). His teaching focuses on Physical Geography and Geology, and he coordinates the MSc in Geographic Information and Climate Change. He actively supervises PhD students and has examined both internally and externally. His research centers on reconstructing past glacial environments and studying glacier and permafrost dynamics in response to climate change. Fieldwork spans the British Isles, Norway, Iceland, Canada, Morocco, Japan, and Antarctica. He has authored/co-authored over 100 publications in leading journals, including The Holocene , Quaternary Science Reviews , and Progress in Physical Geography . He holds editorial roles for The Holocene and Proceedings of the Geologists' Association , and serves on the Quaternary Research Association Executive Board. Key research themes include glacial sedimentology, permafrost dynamics, and paleoclimatic reconstruction. Recent work emphasizes remote sensing applications in alpine regions and the impact of climate change on permafrost ecosystems.
