Dr. Carrie Wiese is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her research focuses on the impact of sex components—gonads and sex chromosomes—on cardiometabolic physiology, with particular emphasis on how genetic sex influences disease mechanisms. Education: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Human Genetics, University of California, Los Angeles (2024) Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology & Biophysics, Vanderbilt University (2019) B.S. in Molecular Biology, University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (2008) Dr. Wiese's research investigates how the sex chromosome complement (XX and XY) causes unequal gene dosage through two mechanisms: 1) the presence and absence of Y chromosome genes and 2) a subset of X chromosome genes escaping X chromosome inactivation, leading to higher expression in XX cells than XY cells. These mechanisms modulate cellular function and impact whole-body physiology. Her current research projects include utilizing multi-omics approaches to assess the impact of gonadal and genetic sex on hepatic function during fatty liver disease, evaluating the impact of sex on epigenetic regulation in atherosclerosis, and determining the role of X chromosome gene Kdm6a in brown adipose energy metabolism. Dr. Wiese has published extensively on sex differences in cardiometabolic disease, with recent publications focusing on X chromosome dosage effects, sex differences in lipid metabolism, and the role of specific genes in sex-biased disease phenotypes. Her work bridges basic genetic mechanisms with clinical implications for understanding sex differences in disease susceptibility and treatment response. Scientific Awards: No specific awards mentioned in the provided text Dr. Wiese is actively mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in her laboratory. Her research has significant implications for understanding sex differences in disease mechanisms and developing more personalized approaches to treating cardiometabolic disorders. She is currently accepting new graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to join her research team. Dr. Wiese's laboratory is part of the Cardiovascular Center at LSU Health Sciences Center, where she collaborates with other researchers investigating cardiovascular disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic approaches.
