Professor Stefan Bauernschuster holds a Chair in Public Economics at the University of Passau since 2013 and is a Research Professor at the Ifo Institute Munich. He is affiliated with CESifo and IZA, and chairs the DFG Research Training Group 2720 on Digital Platform Ecosystems. His work applies micro-econometric methods to policy-relevant questions in labor, population, health, and education economics. Research interests span interdisciplinary topics at the intersection of economics with linguistics, law, history, and political science. Current focuses include digital platforms' socio-economic implications and historical policy analysis (e.g., the 1918 flu pandemic's political effects). His empirical work uses large-scale administrative data, such as hospital records and birth statistics, to assess policy impacts on individual/family decisions in work, health, and family life. Notable studies include analyses of transit strikes' health consequences, birth control's historical health impacts, and the societal effects of speed limits. His work has been cited in the U.S. Economic Report and informs debates on carbon taxes, energy poverty, and labor market reforms. Collaborations include institutions across Germany, Europe, and the U.S.
