John Peterson is the Associate Director and Associate Professor in the School of Music at James Madison University. He holds a Ph.D. (2014, Florida State University), M.M. (2011, University of Colorado at Boulder), and B.Mus. (2008, University of Western Ontario). His research focuses on musical form, meaning in classical/popular music, and pedagogy. Collaborative work includes co-authoring articles in Music Theory Spectrum , Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy , and SMT-V , as well as co-editing Modeling Musical Analysis (Oxford University Press, forthcoming). He revised Open Music Theory , an open-source textbook prioritizing diverse repertoires and topics. John’s teaching spans music theory core courses and seminars on form, social justice, race, and underrepresented composers. A notable seminar combined music analysis with fiber arts student collaborations. He is Technical Editor for Analytical Approaches to World Music and has presented at conferences like the Society for Music Theory and Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory. His 2020 SMT-V article, Detour or Bridge , analyzes contrasting sections in Broadway musicals (e.g., Wicked , Legally Blonde ), exploring their functional roles alongside traditional bridge structures.
