Dr Andy Cunliffe is an Oppenheimer Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Exeter, leading the TESS Lab research group and directing the OPALS program. His work focuses on applied terrestrial ecosystem science, combining geospatial tools, remote sensing, and systems thinking to address sustainability challenges in social-ecological systems. He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration with non-academic partners and champions Open Research practices. Education: PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Exeter (2012–2016). Previous roles include Post-Doctoral Research Assistant at the University of Edinburgh (2016–2017) and Research Fellow at the University of Exeter (2018–2024). Research Interests: Spatial ecology, climate change adaptation, geospatial data science, and sustainable land management. Current projects include drone-based monitoring of Arctic tundra and African rangelands, carbon dynamics in drylands, and policy-relevant studies on regenerative agriculture adoption. Program Leadership: Directs the Oppenheimer Research Programme in African Landscape Systems (OPALS) , a six-year initiative promoting equitable environmental sustainability in Africa. Coordinates the TESS Lab, fostering trainee development through inclusive mentorship. Grant Activity: Secured funding through interdisciplinary partnerships, focusing on applied research that bridges academic expertise and real-world impact. Active in securing grants for drone technology, climate resilience, and ecosystem services. Labs/Teams: TESS Lab (specializing in ecosystem resilience) and OPALS collaborative network.
