Santiago Juan-Navarro is a Professor of Hispanic Literature and Film at Florida International University (FIU), specializing in Film Studies, Historical Fiction, and the intersection of literature, film, and propaganda. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (1995), a M.Phil. (1991), and a B.A. from the Universidad de Valencia (1987). His research focuses on postmodernism, Cuban cinema, and the representation of historical narratives in Latin American and Spanish cultural works. He has authored and co-edited numerous books, including Postmodernismo y metaficci ón historiográfica (2019) and Nuevas aproximaciones al cine hispánico (2011). His articles and book chapters explore topics like Cuban documentary film, the role of cinema in constructing national identity, and intermediality in contemporary works. Notable works include analyses of Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s documentaries and the mythologization of José Martí in Cuban cinema. Dr. Juan-Navarro has received prestigious awards such as the FIU Faculty Senate Excellence in Teaching Award (2012, 2003) and the Fullbright Senior Specialist Roster (2008). He has mentored over 20 doctoral students, including Esteban Alfonso, Déborah Gómez, and Frank Otero Luque. His current research project, The Spanish-Cuban-American-War Goes to the Movies , examines the cinematic portrayal of the 1898 war and its impact on national identities. He has secured grants from institutions like the FIU Provost Humanities Research Grant (2021-2022) and the Latin American Collection Library Grant. His work bridges academic rigor with cultural critique, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to literature and film in the Hispanic world.
