Dr. John Ballato, Sirrine Endowed Chair of Optical Fiber and Professor at Clemson University's Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, is a pioneering optical materials scientist. He invented the Molten Core Method for optical fiber manufacturing during his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University, now used in over 40 countries. His current research focuses on novel optical materials with zero nonlinearities to enable next-generation fibers for communications, medicine, and defense.
