Wei Tong is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Acting Director of the Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He holds a Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics and Structures from Brown University, with postdoctoral research at MIT and Caltech. His expertise spans solid mechanics, materials engineering, and manufacturing, focusing on metal plasticity, ductile failure, and laser materials processing. He has held academic positions at the University of Nebraska and Yale University before joining SMU.
- Education: Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics and Structures (Brown University), M.S. in Applied Mathematics (Brown University), B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (USTC)
His research interests include metal forming simulations, fracture mechanics under impact loading, and additive manufacturing. Key areas of investigation involve orthotropic plasticity modeling, laser welding, and biomechanics of biological materials. Dr. Tong has authored numerous high-impact publications and received an NSF Career Award in 1998.
- Scientific Awards: NSF Career Award (1998)
His lab specializes in experimental and computational methods such as digital image correlation (DIC) for strain analysis and finite element modeling. Current research focuses on anisotropic plasticity of sheet metals, polycrystalline plasticity, and biomechanics. The lab’s facilities include advanced testing equipment for micro-mechanical characterization and thermal strain mapping.
