Maria Hägglund is a Professor at Uppsala University and Academic Hospital, specializing in e-health and health informatics. She served as a Keane OpenNotes Scholar at Harvard Medical School (2019–2020) and leads the research group PATHe: e-health and health data in collaboration . Research Interests include implementation science, patient empowerment through digital tools, open notes, electronic health records (EHRs), generative AI in healthcare, and ethical considerations in patient data access. Her work explores how technology can improve collaboration between patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Recent Trends in her publications focus on EHR usability, generative AI applications, cross-country comparisons of patient portals, and the impact of digital health on mental health and pediatric care. She has contributed to frameworks for sociotechnical EHR implementation and ethical guidelines for open notes. Scientific Recognition : Named Excellent Teacher (2020) by Uppsala University. Active in international consortia like DOME and EFMI Working Group 'Citizen Health Data', representing Sweden in IMIA. Education & Teaching : Former Program Director for the Global Master's in Health Informatics at Karolinska Institutet. Currently teaches in Uppsala's Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering and free-standing courses. Supervises collaborative research projects across institutions. Labs & Collaborations : Leads PATHe group, engages in Nordic and global health informatics initiatives, and contributes to policy development for the European Health Data Space.
