Rene Baranyi is a PostDoc Researcher at TU Wien's Institute of Information Systems Engineering, affiliated with the Faculty of Informatics. He holds a Dr.techn. (PhD) and Dipl.-Ing. (Master's) in Technical Informatics. His primary roles include contributing to the Faculty Council as a Substitute Member and serving on the Curriculum Commission for Informatics. Baranyi's research focuses on integrating Serious Games and Gamification into healthcare, with over 60 developed applications in medical informatics, rehabilitation, and lifestyle medicine. Key areas include exergame development for physical therapy, mobile health solutions for chronic disease management, and digital platforms for medical education. His work bridges game design principles with medical needs, addressing rehabilitation (e.g., stroke, wrist injuries), nutrition awareness, and mental health support. Recent innovations include VR-based wrist therapy systems, gamified stress reduction apps, and AI-driven boxing technique analysis gloves. His research emphasizes accessibility, user-centered design, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with clinicians and engineers. Baranyi has supervised over 20 diploma theses on topics ranging from smart wake-up systems to self-sovereign identity infrastructure for eHealth. He teaches advanced courses on healthcare IT infrastructure and health care information systems at TU Wien. His lab work involves developing low-cost, scalable solutions for rehabilitation and prevention using consumer electronics (e.g., Wii Balance Board). Current projects explore gamified apps for multiple sclerosis patients and AI-enhanced motion analysis in sports medicine.
