Daniel Markthaler is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Biophysics within the Faculty of Science at the University of Stuttgart. He maintains dual affiliations with both the Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production (EEP) at Nobelstr. 12 and the Biophysics Group at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomolecular Systems at Pfaffenwaldring 57 in Stuttgart. Dr. Markthaler holds a PhD in molecular simulation of biological molecules from the University of Stuttgart (2020) and a Dipl.-Ing. in Bioengineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2013). His academic journey includes postdoctoral work at the Dept. of Bioenergetics (Robin Ghosh lab) at the University of Stuttgart during 2020-2021 and 2023. His research spans computational approaches to biomolecular systems with particular expertise in membrane proteins, free energy calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations. Markthaler's work bridges fundamental biophysics with practical applications in vaccine development and bioengineering, especially in bacterial hydrogen production systems. Analysis of his publication record reveals a strong focus on computational biophysics methodology development, particularly in free energy calculations and membrane protein simulations. His work shows consistent progression from fundamental method development to applied research in vaccine design and bioenergy applications. Currently, Markthaler balances academic research with industry engagement, working as a Process Engineer at Chemgineering Germany GmbH (2024-2025) while maintaining his academic affiliations. Previously, he served as a Research Associate and Project Manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in 2022.
