Konrad Fiedler is a University Professor and Head of the Division of Tropical Ecology and Animal Biodiversity at the University of Vienna ’s Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research. His work explores the drivers of biological diversity, focusing on Lepidoptera (butterflies, moths) and their evolutionary, ecological, and coevolutionary dynamics with plants and predators. Research Interests: Evolutionary origins of biodiversity Coevolution between insects and plants Adaptations to predation Community phylogeny and functional diversity Climate change impacts on insect communities Conservation strategies for fragmented habitats Publication Trends highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining phylogenetics, DNA barcoding, and ecological gradients. Recent work spans tropical Andean forests, European grasslands, and Costa Rican reforestation sites, addressing species distribution, body size variation, and community resilience under environmental stress. Labs & Teams: He leads the Division of Tropical Ecology and Animal Biodiversity, which studies insect-plant interactions, community dynamics, and biodiversity conservation in tropical and temperate ecosystems.
