He previously held a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Westminster (2008-2015) and was a Research Physiologist at the University of Brighton (2005-2008). His research focuses on metabolic regulation in health and disease states, particularly type 2 diabetes and elite athlete physiology. Dr. Mackenzie's work explores: Muscle metabolism in health, obesity, and diabetes Role of obesity in insulin resistance and metabolic disease Hematological and muscular adaptations to acute hypoxia Akt/PKB inhibition via IP6K1 and IP7 in insulin signaling Myostatin signaling and skeletal muscle protein turnover His peer-reviewed publications examine topics ranging from hypoxia-induced metabolic changes to dietary interventions for glucose homeostasis. Dr. Mackenzie also engages in media appearances (BBC Radio 4, Horizon documentaries) and consultancy work for metabolic device development (e.g., Mediwise glucose-monitoring technology).
