Stéphane Angles is a Professor of Geography at the University of Lorraine's Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (SHS) in Nancy, where he has served since 2017 after 17 years as a Lecturer at Paris Diderot University. His academic journey spans over three decades with continuous engagement in Mediterranean agricultural geography, landscape studies, and territorial development. His educational foundation includes: 1989: Agrégation in Geography 1997: Doctorate from Michel de Montaigne University – Bordeaux III (Thesis: The olive tree in Andalusia. Geographical study of a traditional Mediterranean culture ) 2016: Habilitation to Supervise Research from Paris 13 University (Scientific volume: Olive growing, olive systems and Mediterranean territories: from the sector to the landscape ) Angles' research centers on agricultural landscapes in Mediterranean environments , specializing in olive growing and viticulture dynamics, territorial identity construction, and agro-ecological transitions. His work integrates cultural heritage processes with contemporary challenges like desertification and sustainable development, focusing on Spain, Mediterranean France, and the broader Basin. Key methodologies include landscape analysis, territorial diagnostics, and socio-spatial modeling of agricultural systems. His recent publications (2021-2025) reveal consistent thematic focus on Mediterranean agri-food systems, particularly the interplay between traditional practices (olive/vine cultivation), landscape evolution, and territorial governance. These works demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches combining historical analysis, spatial planning, and community engagement in addressing food sovereignty and cultural heritage preservation. Scientific recognition: No formal awards or fellowships documented in source materials Angles actively mentors emerging scholars and secures competitive research funding. He currently co-supervises Jimmy Bourret's PhD thesis on global palm/olive oil geopolitics and previously directed 13 Master's territorial diagnoses (2010-2017). His grant portfolio includes ANR-funded projects (PATERMED), European initiatives (OLIVE4ALL under JPI Cultural Heritage), and regional programs (ABIOTERRE, CAETERA), reflecting sustained leadership in Mediterranean agricultural studies. As a core member of the LOTERR laboratory and associate of UMR 7303 TELEMME, Angles collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on Mediterranean landscape transitions. His group integrates remote sensing, field surveys, and policy analysis to address challenges in viticulture revival (Lorraine), olive heritage conservation, and territorial food system development across Mediterranean contexts.
