Professor Periklis Petropoulos is a Deputy Director at the Optoelectronic Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton . His research focuses on Optical Communications , All-Optical Signal Processing , and Novel Fibre and Waveguide Technologies . He leads the Optical Fibre Communications Research Group and serves as Editor-in-Chief of IET Optoelectronics . Education: BSc in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from University of Patras MSc in Communications Engineering from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology PhD in Optical Telecommunications from University of Southampton's ORC His work spans nonlinear photonics , integrated photonic circuits , and next-generation fiber communication systems . Current projects include EPSRC Programme Grant Airguide Photonics and the UK's National Dark Fibre Facility . Research themes include silicon nitride photonics , power-efficient multicore fiber amplifiers , and all-optical signal processing . His supervised projects demonstrate intermodal four-wave mixing for broadband wavelength conversion, energy-efficient fiber components , and hybrid optical transmission systems (including Power Over Fiber and Radio Over Fiber). He has secured over £33M in research funding from EPSRC , European Union , and industry partners. External roles include: Editor-in-Chief of IET Optoelectronics (2019–present) Speaker at international conferences (2022–2024) on topics like grating couplers , silicon nitride integration , and SDM amplifiers He leads Telecommunications Systems Lab and has published >570 papers across leading journals and conferences like ECOC and OFC . He has supervised 17 PhD students to completion.
