Marla Lujan serves as Associate Professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University's College of Human Ecology, where she leads the Lujan Laboratory (Cornell Ovary Lab) investigating the intersection of nutrition, metabolism, and women's reproductive health. Her educational background includes a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology from Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), with postdoctoral training in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. Current research focuses on elucidating pathophysiological mechanisms causing amenorrhea and PCOS through high-resolution ovarian ultrasonography to characterize follicle development and morphology across the reproductive lifespan. Key research themes include: Metabolic drivers of ovulatory dysfunction in PCOS Adolescent ovarian development trajectories in PCOS risk Artificial intelligence applications for ultrasound-based PCOS diagnosis Dietary interventions for improving ovulatory function Cross-disciplinary assessments of healthcare experiences in women with endocrine disruptions Dr. Lujan actively mentors graduate students including Avery Zhang (hypocaloric dietary interventions for PCOS), Samiha Azgar (adolescent ovarian morphology transitions), and Abbey Kampel (ovarian phenotyping in PCOS), while collaborating with Weill Cornell and Children's Mercy Hospital on multi-site studies. Her laboratory recruits participants for ongoing research including the Adolescent Ovary Study and leverages archival ultrasound data for AI diagnostics development. The Lujan Laboratory team comprises graduate students, undergraduate researchers, and postdoctoral trainees working at the intersection of nutritional science, reproductive endocrinology, and imaging technology to advance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for women's reproductive health conditions.
