Jessica Hemmings is Professor of Craft at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, Professor II at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, and Visiting Professor at Moholy-Nagy University of Art & Design, Budapest. Her academic career spans multiple international institutions with a focus on textiles, craft, and material culture. Her educational background includes a BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MA in Comparative Literature from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Professor Hemmings' research interests center on textiles and contemporary craft, with particular attention to material culture and literature, postcolonial literature and contemporary craft, lifewriting and embodied knowledge, and the cultural contexts of Zimbabwe and Indonesia. Her current research project "Carceral Craft: the material of oppression or expression?" is funded by the Swedish Research Council (2025-2027) and investigates textile crafts made in carceral contexts. Her extensive publication record demonstrates a commitment to exploring the intersections of craft, culture, and social contexts. Her recent work has focused on postcolonial textiles, material memory, and the political dimensions of textile practice.
