João Borges serves as a Senior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry and CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he leads research on biofunctional supramolecular biomaterials for therapeutic applications. His work bridges nanobiotechnology and regenerative medicine through innovative material design. Education: PhD in Chemistry, University of Porto His research program focuses on molecularly engineered supramolecular systems including peptide-based hydrogels and layer-by-layer nanobiomaterials that interface with living systems. Key areas encompass controlled drug/protein delivery, dynamic self-assembly of biomolecules (polysaccharides, peptides, nucleic acids), and bioinstructive matrices for tissue engineering. These platforms enable precise manipulation of cell functions through chemically programmable material properties. Awards & Honors: Chemistry Europe Fellow (Class of 2022/2023) Journal of Materials Chemistry B Emerging Investigator (2023) IUPAC Periodic Table of Younger Chemists Award (2019) Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) Member of Biomaterials Chemistry Group (RSC) Borges directs major research initiatives including the EU-funded SUPRALIFE project and national SUPRASORT program as Principal Investigator, while mentoring early-career scientists globally through the Global Young Academy and International Younger Chemists Network. He lectures extensively on biomaterials science and scientific communication at graduate levels. His laboratory operates within CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, collaborating internationally through editorial roles (Associate Editor, Frontiers in Medical Technology; Advisory Board, Journal of Materials Chemistry B) and leadership in the Global Conversation on Sustainability – a joint IYCN/IUPAC initiative advancing UN Sustainable Development Goals through scientific diplomacy.
