François Héran (born May 18, 1953, in Laon) is a French anthropologist and demographic sociologist serving as inaugural holder of the Migrations and Societies chair at Collège de France since 2017. He additionally presides over the Board of Orientational Advisors at Paris' Porte-Dorée palace since January 2020, directing public outreach initiatives. Héran's research traverses migration dynamics, demographic sociology, and anthropological analyses of social structures. His seminal work examines cross-cultural couple formation patterns, familial educational investments, and immigration's political implications within the European Union. As a multilingualism specialist, he investigates linguistic diversity's societal impact while documenting French sociability through electoral participation studies and kinship system evolution. His publication trajectory reveals a methodological shift from historical-structural analyses (1980-2009) toward contemporary policy-oriented migration research (2016-2021). Recent works dissect French population diversity through empirical surveys while addressing urgent debates around immigration integration, freedom of expression in education, and demographic futurism. Héran's scholarly contributions have earned significant recognition: Laureate from Zellidja Foundation (1969) for Mediterranean ethnographic fieldwork Knight of the National Order of Merit (2009) Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences Laureate (2010) for lifetime achievement No student advisement records or research grant details appear in source materials. His institutional roles focus on chair-based research leadership rather than laboratory or team management at Collège de France.
