Michael Richard Benjamin is a Principal Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he leads the Marine Autonomy Lab within the Center for Ocean Engineering. With over 25 years of experience in marine autonomy research, his work bridges theoretical control algorithms with practical field implementations of autonomous marine vehicles. Professor Benjamin's research focuses on behavior-based architecture for autonomous decision-making using multi-objective optimization with interval programming. His work centers on developing robust collision avoidance systems for unmanned surface vehicles that comply with international maritime regulations (COLREGS), swarm coordination of multiple autonomous marine vehicles, and open-source autonomy frameworks. He founded the MOOS-IvP open source project at MIT in 2007, which has become a significant framework in marine autonomy research and development. His recent publication record shows remarkable productivity, with 15 publications from 2023-2025 covering diverse aspects of marine autonomy including multi-agent systems, adaptive control, sensor integration, and field-deployable low-cost autonomous vehicles.
