Alok Kapoor is a Professor at UMass Chan Medical School in the T.H. Chan School of Medicine, with dual appointments in the Department of Medicine (Division of Health System Science) and the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences. His research focuses on improving care for older adults, particularly in the areas of anticoagulation therapy, atrial fibrillation management, and surgical outcomes in geriatric populations. Dr. Kapoor's research interests center on optimizing anticoagulation therapy for older adults, reducing disparities in care, and improving outcomes for patients with atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism. His work often involves interdisciplinary collaborations with pharmacists, geriatricians, and cardiologists to develop and test interventions that enhance medication safety and patient outcomes in both ambulatory and post-acute care settings. He has a particular focus on vulnerable populations including older adults with frailty and those residing in long-term care facilities. His recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in digital health interventions for atrial fibrillation management, pharmacist-led interventions for anticoagulation safety, and preoperative interventions for older surgical patients. The research shows increasing emphasis on health equity, particularly regarding racial and ethnic disparities in anticoagulation use among long-term care residents. Dr. Kapoor serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded studies including the SUPPORT-AF series of trials focused on improving anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation, and the OASIS studies examining surgical outcomes in older adults with frailty. His current R01 grant (SUPPORT-AF IV) is active through June 2026. His collaborative network includes prominent researchers in geriatrics, cardiology, and health services research, with frequent collaborations with David McManus, Jerry Gurwitz, Sybil Crawford, and Kathleen Mazor. His work spans multiple disciplines but maintains a consistent focus on improving care for older adults with complex medical conditions.
