Erik Kristensen is a Full Professor of Ecology at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. He holds a Ph.D. in Marine Ecology from the University of Aarhus (1984) and a Dr.Sc. in Biogeochemistry from Odense University (1996). His career spans over three decades, including roles as Assistant Professor (1985–1989), Associate Professor (1989–2017), and Full Professor since 2017. He is actively involved in teaching and supervision, having guided 117 M.Sc. and 15 Ph.D. students. In 2016, he was awarded the 'Science Teacher of the Year' by the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on biogeochemical processes in coastal sediments, particularly post-restoration dynamics following managed realignment, sand capping, and eelgrass transplantation. He leads projects funded by institutions like the Aage V. Jensen Foundation and Velux Foundation, totaling millions in grants. Key projects include the Gyldensteen Coastal Lagoon restoration and Odense Fjord ecological studies. Kristensen’s work integrates field experiments, laboratory studies, and ecological modeling to address challenges in carbon sequestration, sediment stability, and ecosystem recovery. He collaborates globally, contributing to journals like Global Change Biology and Marine Ecology Progress Series . His editorial roles include Contributing Editor for Marine Ecology Progress Series . Notable recognitions include the L&O Outstanding Reviewer Award (2010) and Coastal and Estuarine Research Foundation’s Outstanding Reviewer Award (2012). His research impacts policy and restoration practices, as seen in media contributions regarding Odense Fjord’s ecological health.
