Lone Gram is Professor of Bacterial Ecophysiology and Biotechnology at Technical University of Denmark (DTU), affiliated with the DTU Microbes Initiative and Center for Microbial Secondary Metabolites. She leads research on bacterial eco-physiology with dual focus on controlling pathogenic bacteria and enabling biotechnological applications of marine bacteria.
Research interests include:
- Microbial secondary metabolites and their natural functions
- Novel antibacterial compounds from marine sources
- Bacterial ecology in aquatic environments
- Probiotic development for aquaculture and food safety
- Marine biotechnology applications
Publication analysis shows 45% focus on marine antimicrobials, 30% on probiotic systems, and 25% on bacterial interaction mechanisms. Recent work emphasizes algal-microbe interactions, anti-vibrio compounds, and wildlife probiotic applications.
Awards include the Villum Annual Award (2016), Ridder af Dannebrogordenen (2018), and Fritz Kaufmann Mindefond Award (2008). Gram supervises 5 PhD students working on antibiotic discovery, microbiome analysis, and TDA-mediated interactions.
She directs projects integrating omics technologies and microbial co-culture systems (2025-2028), marine antibiotic discovery (2025-2028), and molecular mechanisms of bacterial interactions (2023-2026). International collaborations include Harvard Medical School and University of Maryland.
