Bruce Allen Murphy is the Fred Morgan Kirby Professor of Civil Rights in the Government & Law department at Lafayette College. He has held this position for 25 years, following teaching at Penn State University. His academic career spans Constitutional law education, judicial biography writing, and American government analysis. Murphy holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on the politicization of the Supreme Court, judicial biography, and American democracy’s trajectory. Notable works include biographies of Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia, William O. Douglas, and Abe Fortas, as well as the textbook Approaching Democracy , now in its 10th edition. Murphy has been recognized with Lafayette College’s top awards for teaching and scholarship, including the Marquis Award for Distinguished Teaching (2011) and the Mary Louise Van Arsdalen Award (2015). His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical analysis and student mentorship, evident in courses like Constitutional Law and Personality, Politics, and Judicial Decision Making . Beyond academia, Murphy engages in civic education initiatives, collaborating with organizations like the National Constitution Center and the Rendell Center for Civics. His publications span legal scholarship, poetry, and historical analysis, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to understanding governance and justice.
