Karen Fisher-Vanden is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the College of Agricultural Sciences. She holds the title of Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE) Fellow and was named a Distinguished Professor in 2022. Her research focuses on economic and integrated assessment modeling for climate policy, energy systems, and technology development in developing countries, particularly China. Her work examines climate change impacts on agriculture, water resources, and energy demand, with a strong emphasis on policy instruments like carbon taxes and water markets. Notable contributions include developing the Harmonized Database of Western U.S. Water Rights (HarDWR) and analyzing power system transitions under climate constraints. She leads interdisciplinary projects such as a $17M study on climate adaptation strategies funded in 2021. Research highlights include modeling climate-driven migration patterns in the U.S., evaluating water market efficiency in the western U.S., and investigating technological spillovers in China’s industries. Her work bridges economic theory with practical policy design, emphasizing use-inspired integrated assessment tools for decision-making under uncertainty. Awards: Distinguished Professor (2022), IEE Fellow Key Projects: $17M climate adaptation study, HarDWR database, Phoenix IAM model development Themes: Climate mitigation/adaptation, energy-water nexus, developing economies
