Selis Önel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. She holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University (2006) and has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and academic leadership. Her primary roles include directing a research lab focused on microfluidics, biomedical applications, and electrochemical machining, as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in chemical engineering and mathematics. Education: - Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, Northeastern University (2006) - M.S. Chemical Engineering, Middle East Technical University (2000) - B.S. Chemical Engineering, Middle East Technical University (1997) Research Interests: Dr. Önel’s work spans thermodynamics, materials science, and biomedical engineering. Her research focuses on mathematical modeling of solidification processes, microfluidic systems for cell preservation, and optimization of electrochemical machining techniques. She leads projects funded by the National Science Foundation of Turkey and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, advancing technologies for MEMS devices and biopreservation. Awards: - Fulbright Visiting Scholar Award (2016–2017) - TASSA Young Scholar Award (2008) - Phi Beta Delta Honor Society (2003) Advising & Grants: Supervised 13+ theses, including studies on electrochemical machining and wheat quality analysis. Active in grants securing funding for R&D projects and international collaborations. Served on university committees and founded the Northeastern University Ankara Alumni Chapter. Labs & Teams: Directs the Advanced Materials Processing Lab at Hacettepe, collaborating with Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital on biopreservation technologies. Co-developed a novel automatic electrochemical machining device with Techno-Innovation grants.
