Professor Sergio Cavalaro is a civil engineer and Professor of Infrastructure Systems at Loughborough University, serving as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation. He leads multidisciplinary research initiatives addressing challenges in the built environment, including automation in construction, circular economy practices, and advanced materials. His work focuses on accelerating the transition from research to practical applications, exemplified by innovations like the world-first large-scale 3D concrete printing system with Acciona and automated repair solutions for Network Rail. He is Deputy Director of Doctoral Programmes and a key figure in networks such as UKCRIC (UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure and Cities), where he coordinates large-scale projects across universities. His leadership roles include co-founding the NHS Academia-Industry Partnership (AIP) and developing frameworks for multi-institutional collaborations. Recent projects include EPSRC-funded studies on digital modeling for 3D printed concrete and UKRI-led circular economy initiatives. Research interests span structural design, durability of construction materials, and sustainable practices. Notable contributions include improving NHS infrastructure resilience during the pandemic and advancing fiber-reinforced concrete technologies. His work frequently involves partnerships with industry leaders like Acciona, Network Rail, and IQE, bridging academic research with commercialization through initiatives like his spinout 'Smart Engineering.'
