Kristen Schilt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at The University of Chicago, serving as Director of Graduate Studies. Her research focuses on gender, transgender studies, work dynamics, and qualitative methods, with a particular emphasis on uncovering cultural assumptions that perpetuate inequality. She holds a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. from UCLA.
Her seminal work Just One of the Guys? examines transgender men’s workplace experiences, revealing how societal gender norms persist despite individual transitions. Schilt co-edited Other, Please Specify: Queer Methods in Sociology, advancing interdisciplinary queer research methodologies. Current projects include a historical analysis of transgender research in 1950s sociology via the 'Agnes' case and a study on major life changes such as gender transitions or religious conversions.
Her recent publications address LGBTQ+ health disparities among older adults, digital ethnography innovations, and the legacy of Changing Women in a Changing Society. Schilt has co-directed films exploring transgender history and contributed to debates on gender essentialism and cultural panic.
She previously directed the Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality at UChicago and remains active in academic advocacy. Her work bridges sociology, ethnography, and queer theory, emphasizing both empirical rigor and cultural critique.
