Tianning Tang is a Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow and Course Director of the Intelligent Earth CDT at the University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science. He holds a BEng from the University of Nottingham and a DPhil from Oxford under Prof. Thomas Adcock. His research focuses on fluid mechanics, machine learning applications in ocean engineering, and rogue wave dynamics. He has won awards including the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fellowship (2023) and the Osborne Reynolds Day competition (2022). Research interests include extreme wave events, nonlinear wave-structure interactions, and data-driven methods for environmental fluid mechanics. Recent projects involve intelligent characterization of wave breaking via machine learning and developing hybrid models for tidal energy forecasting. Tang collaborates with the Environmental Fluid Mechanics group and co-authors numerous peer-reviewed studies in journals like Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Applied Ocean Research . Awards include scholarships from The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and multiple recognitions for academic excellence during his undergraduate studies. His work bridges theoretical fluid mechanics with practical engineering solutions for offshore renewable energy systems.
