Peter Arne Svenonius is a Professor of English Linguistics at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, affiliated with the Department of Language and Culture within the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. His research focuses on syntax and its interfaces with morphology, phonology, and semantics, emphasizing linguistic theory development and language universals. He is a member of the CASTL-FISH research group and contributes to the C-LaBL (Computational and Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism and Language) initiative. Key research interests include extended projections, syntactic features, span-based theories of word formation, and morphosyntactic phenomena in languages like Norwegian, Sámi, and Sierra Miwok. Svenonius has published extensively on topics such as hierarchical structure in syntax, morphological alternations, and the interplay between syntax and semantics. His work frequently addresses theoretical questions in the Minimalist Program, exploring feature-driven syntax and the emergence of syntactic structures. Recent publications highlight contributions to the understanding of verb clusters in Germanic languages, the Norwegian definite suffix, and the application of span theory to word structure. He has also engaged with language acquisition debates, contrasting rule-based versus item-based learning mechanisms. Svenonius maintains active involvement in collaborative research, including projects on linguistic explanation and domain specialization.
