Camilo José Cela Conde is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), holding the position of Catedrático since January 1999. He serves as Director of the Laboratory of Human Systematics at UIB, where he leads interdisciplinary research integrating evolutionary biology, cognitive neuroscience, and philosophy. His research spans Human Evolution , Philosophy of Biology , Systematics , Cognitive Processes , Aesthetic Perception , and Moral Behavior . Cela-Conde pioneers neuroaesthetics, investigating how neural mechanisms shape beauty appreciation and moral cognition through fMRI and EEG studies. His work reveals cultural-biological interactions in aesthetic judgment and evolutionary foundations of moral behavior. Recent publications (2011-2014) demonstrate a cohesive focus on neural dynamics of aesthetic experience, with collaborative projects mapping brain networks during beauty appreciation and exploring fractal dimensions in art perception. His research consistently bridges evolutionary theory with empirical neuroscience. Key honors include: Fundación Juan March Award in Sociology (1975) Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (1999) Membership in the Center for Academic Research and Teaching in Anthropogeny (2008) Cela-Conde has mentored nine doctoral students across philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, including Nadal Roberts (aesthetic preference neuroscience) and Flexas Oliver (abstract/figurative stimulus perception). His laboratory fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration between anthropologists, neuroscientists, and philosophers to decode the evolutionary origins of human cognition and aesthetic capacity.
