Arlette Kolta is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Université de Montréal, with a secondary affiliation in the Department of Neuroscience. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the same institution. Her research focuses on neuronal and glial mechanisms underlying rhythmic masticatory movements and chronic muscle pain, particularly the role of fusimotor afferents. As an academic leader, she has served as Interim Director of the CIRCA (Interdisciplinary Research Center on the Brain and Learning) and directed the RSBO (Research Network in Oral and Bone Health). She has supervised over 40 students and postdoctoral fellows, contributing to transformative research in neurobiology.
- Education: PhD in Neuroscience (1991, Université de Montréal)
- Research Affiliations: RSBO, Groupe de recherche sur la signalisation neuronale et la circuiterie (SNC), Réseau québécois de recherche sur la douleur (RQRD)
Her research integrates electrophysiological, anatomical, and behavioral approaches to explore sensorimotor integration in trigeminal circuits. Recent work emphasizes astrocyte-neuron interactions in chronic pain and mastication control. Over 20 funded grants highlight her leadership, including major projects on astrocyte roles in cortical information processing and neuron-glia interactions.
Publications span astrocyte signaling, pain mechanisms, and rhythmic motor patterns. Her administrative service includes roles in academic governance, research committees, and international conference organization. She has mentored students across neuroscience, biomedical sciences, and dentistry programs.
