Stephan Tillmann is a Professor of Geometric Topology at the University of Sydney and Executive Director of the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute . He has held visiting positions at institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics, University of Melbourne (2002) Bachelor of Science (Honours, First Class), University of Melbourne (1997) Zwischenprüfung in Mathematics and Philosophy, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (1996) Research Interests: His work focuses on geometric topology , particularly 3-manifolds , character varieties , triangulations , and hyperbolic structures . He explores connections between tropical geometry and normal surfaces , as well as computational methods in low-dimensional topology.
